1. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The food we ate in the past was healthier than the food we eat today.
Back in the days, the world suffered from instances of food-related issues such as shortage, sanitation, and nutritional content. Today, with the numerous advances in related fields of technology, most if not all, of these problems are just a memory of the past. Many claim, in particular, that the foods we consume today are of a much higher quality, thereby making them healthier to eat. But is this certainly the case? I don’t think so.
The last time I checked, there were lots of fast food chains sprawling in our cities and even in some suburban areas. In these places are common sights of obese children and other unhealthy-looking consumers. It does not stop here. The situation gets worse. Remember the time that the price of staple food like rice was sky-high because of limited supply? Well, that’s not the case now. However, there were news reports showing that most of these food supplies, though plentiful, lack the necessary nutritional content. Certain varieties were even proven to be harmful instead. Does the term Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) ring a bell? In spite of our efforts to produce agricultural products with higher yield, the main concern seems to be this. Are we really eating healthier food now?
Food fuels us. Depending on the quality of food we eat, our resistance to sickness, fatigue, and overall wellbeing is determined. Then how come most people now easily get sick or die early? Yes, there are other factors to consider like air pollution and the likes. However, food forms the large proportion of our requirements for survival and daily accomplishment of our activities.
This being said, I firmly conclude that the foods we eat today are not as healthy compared to those in the past. Despite the advances of modern technology, certain by-products are inevitable. Thus, it is up to us to effectively filter what goes into our mouths lest we suffer from unhealthy foods’ effects.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The government should support artists rather than allow them to support themselves.
There is a heated debate about whether government should support artists in our society. While some people believe this is a really good idea for artists, others insist governmental support is a waste of resources. From my perspective, I think the government should support artists for the sake of public interests.
First of all, more talented and enthusiastic people would choose to become artists if they had government support. There is no denial that many artists are struggling to support themselves no matter how talented they are or how hard they work, which leads to a concern that becoming an artist may not be a wise choice among the public, especially among the parents. A young boy who loves oil-painting and hopes to become a professional painter in the future is likely to get criticism, rather than support from his parents. Without any government support, the artists had to suffer heavy economic pressure, in the meanwhile the people who want to become an artist had to bear much social pressure and misunderstanding as well, all of which have contributed to a continued decline of the number of artists. Apparently, government support to the artists will largely resolve this social problem. By guaranteeing a respectful living for artists, more talented people will become artists and make more contributions to the cultural development.
In addition, government support would enable artists to devote more time and energy to the artistic work they really like, instead of the boring work they used to have done for making a basic living. As artists need to earn some money in order to support themselves today, they have no choice but doing some work they have no interests at all, such as playing piano in a local hotel, painting portraits for celebrities and singing popular songs in a noisy bar. These kinds of work have nothing to do with the art they are pursuing. Nevertheless, they have to do it no matter how reluctant they are to support themselves. This unfortunate situation could be changed if they have government support. They will be able devote themselves to achieving their artistic ambitions without bothering with making money.
Last but not least, the government support could also increase the public awareness of art among the general public, thus making more people appreciate artistic works. The government can show how much it valuable and treasure art by providing support to artists. As a consequence, more people will be encouraged by government to pay more attention to art, which will benefits both the artists and the public in the long run.
In conclusion, I believe that the government should support artists rather than allow them to support themselves. Not only the number of artists and artistic works will increase considerably, but the society will be benefited as a result.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In the past young people depended on their parents for making decisions. Today, young people are better able to make decisions on their own.
With the development of society, our living habits have been changed greatly. One of the most significant changes is the issue of whom we young people depend on when making a decision. In the past, young people usually depended on their older family members, especially their parents. However, in contemporary society, we young adults tend to make choice on our own. Here are the reasons.
Admittedly, in the past, the ways they acquired information, most of which come from experience, were limited. It was parents who are much more experienced than their children. In this case, they tended to listen to parents’ advice and let them to control determination. As we all know, over the several decades, parents made the decision for their children who they would marry with in China. At that time, girls had no chance to meet the young men with the same age. However, their parents had the permission to know their children’s future partners through various ways. Without doubt, it was a right choice to depend on their parents when making a decision in the past.
However, we can get access to a great amount of information, which do good to decision making nowadays. Surfing on the internet, clicking on the mouse, news will display on your computer screen within seconds. What’s more, after educating, we have learnt knowledge in a system way, which enable us to understand ourselves and the world better. All of these create a good atmosphere for us young people to make decision on ourselves. According to a survey conducted by Peking University aiming to find out how students choose their majors, 80 percent of students depend on their own while less than 20% decided by their parents or teachers instead. Most students are independent nowadays. They would listen to their parents, but it is their own who determine the final choice.
Another important reason is that some of adults’ experience works less effectively on our generation because conditions change rapidly in the information age. In the past, it was less likely for youngsters to move out of our hometowns while we usually move from one place to another nowadays. So parents’ idea might not fit our situation any more. Consequently, we prefer to make a decision depend on our own experience.
In sum, for the reasons I mentioned above, I totally agree that in contemporary society, we young adults are better able to make choice on our own.
4. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Professional athletes who receive high salaries, such as football and basketball players, deserve what they get.
During the recent day, some people claim that the professional athletes always get much more salaries than they deserve. From my perspective, I cannot agree with this statement and I have several reasons to support my point.
First and foremost, athletes should experience the hardest training which other people cannot imagine. When normal people are still in the bed, they have to get up and start running and training. And at the same time, they cannot enjoy entertainment like normal people. For example, a professional should exercise every day. If one day he miss the training, it not only he would punished by coach，but also he would feel a lot of pain than before because his muscle has accustomed to the intensity of everyday's exercise. Meanwhile, his body has already been ruled and programmed. Furthermore, in order to get better grades, it is inevitable that the athlete get hurt. Sometimes it even endangers to his life. Thus, it is obvious that they should get the high salary for the reason that he pays far more efforts than others.
What's more, because an athlete sacrifices his life into gym, he knows little about others such as social and economic life, which means that except being an athlete, he can do nothing at all. In one day, there is no doubt he would quit from the athlete’s career when he gets older. However, there is no work he can do after leaving gym. Hence, it is hard for him to raise himself up not mention to other families. The only economic resource is the salary he has saved during being an athlete. Therefore, the professional athlete should be given the higher salary.
Admittedly, someone will argue that Yao Ming is becoming the coach. And he is richer than before. But we cannot forget this type of people must be the minority. Much more people cannot have the opportunity like Yao Ming. In fact, according to the data from the Internet, 80% of athletes retire from the gym center, they are under huge pain which caused by high-intensive training and poor for the reason that no company will to offer job to them.
As the result, I strongly believe that professional athletes should be provided high salaries. Because they suffer a lot and do the normal people cannot do. And the public has the obligation to raise his rest of time even after retiring for the reason that the career they do is for the honor of country.
5. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Teaching was a harder job in the past than it is today.
Students definitely have the biggest opportunity to interact with teachers. So with many years of being a student, I believe I am quite qualified to express my point of view that teaching has become more demanding than it was in the past. I have witnessed how my teachers have to spend more time and energy on their work. There are certainly several reasons for this change.
In the first place, as students' learning ability has greatly improved compared with the past, teachers accordingly have to be more prepared to meet this improvement. There is an old saying in China that you must have a barrel of water if you want to give out a drop of water. This means a teacher must be knowledgeable enough in order to impart what they know to students. That's why getting a certificate for teaching is becoming increasingly hard in China. Teachers are required to be equipped with more knowledge and better teaching skills before they are qualified to teach students with higher learning ability.
Another important reason why I think teaching becomes harder is that the whole society including parents has placed a higher expectation on education, which certainly is part of teachers' responsibility. In the past, parents sent their children to school mainly hoping that they could became literate through education. But this is no more the case today. Many people, including my parents hope that I can go to a prestigious university and thus improve my social and economic status in future. As a result, students have to learn harder and teachers have to teach harder. They must compete with each other to educate more promising students. Therefore, the modern society exerts more pressure and duty onto teachers.
In a word, with the improvement of teaching standards and heavier education responsibility, teachers are experiencing a tougher work than before. Maybe that's why we should show respect and understanding to our teachers in our daily interaction with them.
6. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? To make children do well in school, parents should limit the hours that children spend on watching TV or movies.
Nowadays children spend a large amount of time watching television. Some might say that this generation of children has wasted their lives in front of the TV. I believe if children are only allowed to watch a limited about of TV, they will be more successful in school.
Studies have shown that television provides little to know stimulation in the mental development of children. Experts say that a child learns more doing an activity than a child who watches a TV program about that activity. Even though educational shows, like a nature program, might show children nature they cannot find near their homes, it is still important that children explore the world around them. Playing or doing other activities, like playing an instrument or reading helps children develop thinking skills. By doing and seeing things, children develop the critical thinking skills necessary to be successful in school.
In addition, making children get off the couch and go to do activities helps create healthy habits. A child who runs around outside and plays with friends has better health and better social skills. If a child just stays at home and stares at the TV, he has a high risk of becoming obese. My little cousin watches too much television. When I go to visit him, he does not even say hello to me. All he does is watch TV. Once I tried to get him outside to play basketball, but we had to go in after only a few minutes because he could not breathe. Limiting television time keeps children healthy and makes them more able to focus in school.
Finally, if parents restrict the amount of television their children can watch, this gives children more time to study. I once helped tutor my neighbor’s son. The rules at his house were that he could watch TV as soon as he was finished with his homework. So when he would get home from school, he would do his homework as quickly as possible. I always had to help him correct his homework mistakes. I think if his parents only let him watch half an hour of TV a day, then he would have gotten better grades and not needed my tutoring.
Watching too much television is not healthy for children and parents should limit the amount they let their children watch. This gives children more time to focus on their homework. Also, rather than watching TV, children should go out and play. Playing helps children develop and keeps them healthy. Staying healthy helps children focus in school.
7. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In order to attract good students, a university should spend a lot of money funding social activities.
I understand the need for a university to want to attract a lot of good students, however, it should not come at the price of education. Funding a lot of social activities is definitely a great way of attracting good students and a good reputation, but just like anything in life we have to look at the pros and cons.
To start off, what is a good student? Are we talking about someone who is a genius at math, a potential star quarterback or a future valedictorian? If the school is looking for the coming years ‘mathlete’ lineup they should fund an event mathlete would be interested in, and the same goes for the other kinds of activities. Needless to say, different social groups are interested in different activities.
I believe that there are two kinds of students, extremely motivated ones who have a well thought-out career plan and the ones who attend university because it is the norm. Even though social events might be interesting for both parties, from personal experience I know for a fact that the second group of students would be a lot more impressed by them compared to the first group. For people not interested in becoming a doctor, lawyer or any other profession needing straight A’s, those events are what university are all about.
On the other hand, the average good student does not choose to attend a university because of the social activities they can participate in at that university, but rather how the university will help them to achieve their dreams. Hosting events is a great way to keep up school spirit, but not the ideal way to attract good students. Instead of spending a lot of money on events they could invest more money into good teachers, making the educational institute more attractive to motivated students. After all, there is plenty of time to party and mingle, but if you don’t reach the grade that you needed you are going to have to pay for it later.
In short, spending the majority of the money on improving the quality of education would lead to higher average grades and more interested applicants. As in any business, marketing is not something that can be thrown aside, so funding events is also key to attracting students and future funding. For this reason, I feel that it is important to find the proper balance between quality of education and social events. School spirit is one of the major motivators for a big share of the students and should therefore not be taken lightly.
8. Many high school students are doing a lot of school work already. Some people believe that students should help their parents with household chores, since it’s the best way to give them a sense of responsibility.
Recently some parents suggested even students are facing big study pressure in school, it is still important for students to help with household chores in family because it is meaningful for them to build their senses of responsibilities in this way. I agree with the idea and here are some of my reasons.
Firstly, study cannot become an excuse of laziness. It is pretty normal that many students use study as the response to parents’ help requests of housework. For example, my brother, who is in middle school now, has never even done any kind of chores before. Every time my aunt asked him to do a favor like cleaning or washing dishes, his response would be that he had no time because there was too much homework. Even when he was just playing the computer game. And for those parents which hope their children have a bright future, most of them choose not trouble their children in such circumstances. However, this kind of indulgent attitude makes escape and avoidance become their children's habitual ways of facing responsibilities in long term.
Also, making children to participate in the working process can cultivate their sense of cherishing fruits of the labour of others. Naughty children always like to make destructions of materials in the house, such like damaging the manicured lawns, soiling clean sheets and carpets, or tracking up clean floors. However, if they could experience the tiredness of washing clothes, cleaning up floors or manicuring lawns, I believe they will not make damages anymore.
Some people may say that it is hard to push their children to do the housework. Also pushing students to do such things out of unwillingness may cause opposite effects. However, there exist better way such as telling children that they can earn some pocket money by helping with housework, which is not only an incentive mechanism but also an educational way to cultivate fiscal sense at young age.
All of above, asking the students to help do household chores can both cultivate their responsibilities and prevent naughty children's disruptive behaviors. Moreover, parents should take good ways of guiding students to do such works but not pushing.
9. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Patience is usually not a good strategy; we should take action now rather than later.
When it comes to talking about the advantages and disadvantages of patience and dispatch, disputes always exist. From my point of view, taking action now is a better way to deal with the tasks for the following three reasons.
First, taking action now saves time. As we all know, time is money. Therefore, a worker with strong ability of execution is more likely to be appreciated by the boss and then to earn more money. Moreover, if we take action and then finish the work ahead of time, we can own more spare time to relax. Thus, taking action not only can promote our financial benefits, but also enhance our quality of leisure time because high efficiency is well coordinated with the pace and the rule of the society.
Second, taking action now promises enough time for revision. To state it more clearly, this strategy can make the worker finish the task in a relatively shorter time, so if the task has something wrong, the employee can make full use of the saved time to revise the original version. That is to say, taking action now is also a tactic for guaranteeing the quality of the mission.
Finally, taking action now seizes the opportunity, a common sense that is fit to all walks of life. For example, Warren Buffet is so decisive in the constant changing stock market, and that is why he can earn more money, so Mark Elliot Zuckerberg can embody his creative idea to make people amazed for the thriving of Facebook. Exactly speaking, taking action is the premise of being successful.
In a word, if we think twice about the patience and taking action, it is not difficult for us to reach a conclusion that taking action deserves more. Moreover, although patience is pretty vital, the current trend needs self-display!
